Discover Montserrat: The Perfect Day Trip from Barcelona
Just over an hour from Barcelona, the jagged peaks of Montserrat rise from the Catalan countryside. The name means “serrated mountain” in Catalan, and once you see the rock formations shaped by millions of years of wind and rain, you’ll understand why. Perched high on the mountainside is the Benedictine Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, one of Catalonia’s most important spiritual sites and among Spain’s most visited pilgrimage destinations.
This Montserrat tour from Barcelona brings together everything you need for a relaxed, well-planned day: return train and rack railway tickets, entry to the Montserrat Basilica, a visit to the Throne of Our Lady to see the famous Black Madonna, access to the “Montserrat Portes Endins” audiovisual space, a tasting of local liqueurs and traditional Coca de Montserrat, and a buffet lunch at the Montserrat Restaurant. You don’t have to work out transport connections, queue for separate tickets or look for somewhere to eat. Everything is arranged, so you can focus on the views, the history and the atmosphere of this remarkable mountain.
Important: Exchange your QR code for your train ticket
The QR code you receive from us is not a train ticket. Before your trip, you need to exchange it for your actual train and rack railway tickets.
Please go to the Plaça d’Espanya metro station in Barcelona and follow the signs for the FGC trains (line R5 to Montserrat). In the underground hall, you’ll find the Montserrat ticket office, a glass booth with the orange “MONTSERRAT” sign on top (see photo). Show your QR code to the staff at the counter, and they will give you your tickets.
🕗 The ticket office is open for exchanges from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Exchanges are not possible outside these hours.
We recommend arriving at least 20–30 minutes before your train so you have enough time for the exchange.

A Scenic Journey by Train and Rack Railway
Your day starts in Barcelona, where you’ll board the train toward Montserrat. As the city recedes behind you, the landscape opens into rolling hills, small Catalan towns and, eventually, the first dramatic view of the mountain itself. It’s an easy, comfortable way to travel, with no traffic, parking or driving on winding mountain roads.
At the foot of the mountain, you’ll switch to the Montserrat Rack Railway (Cremallera de Montserrat), one of the highlights of the trip. The rack railway climbs steadily up the mountainside, using a toothed rail to handle the steep slope. Through the large windows you’ll see the Llobregat River valley drop away below you, while the rock pinnacles of Montserrat seem to grow larger with every turn. The ride is smooth and short, and the views make it one of the most memorable parts of the day. Have your camera ready.
Return tickets for both the train and the rack railway are included, so you can travel back to Barcelona without extra cost or planning.
Montserrat Basilica: A Masterpiece in the Mountains
At the heart of the monastery complex stands the Montserrat Basilica. Your entry is included, so you can step straight inside and take in its richly decorated interior. The Basilica’s facade, its central nave, the side chapels and the warm glow of hanging lamps create a deeply atmospheric space, whether you visit for religious reasons, for architecture and art, or simply out of curiosity.
The Benedictine community has lived and prayed at Montserrat for nearly a thousand years. Over the centuries the monastery has been a centre of faith, learning, music and Catalan culture. Standing inside the Basilica, surrounded by centuries of history and the sheer mountain walls outside, is an experience many visitors remember long after their trip to Spain.
Visit the Throne of Our Lady: The Black Madonna of Montserrat
The most treasured part of any visit to Montserrat is the chance to see the Virgin of Montserrat, the Black Madonna, affectionately known in Catalan as “La Moreneta” (“the little dark one”). This Romanesque wooden statue of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child is the patron saint of Catalonia and has drawn pilgrims for centuries.
Your tour includes a visit to the Throne of Our Lady, where the statue sits in an ornate chamber above the main altar of the Basilica. Visitors reach it through a decorated passageway lined with art and mosaics. Following tradition, many pilgrims touch or kiss the orb the Virgin holds in her hand while making a wish or saying a prayer. Whether you’re a believer or a traveller interested in culture and history, it’s a quiet and moving moment and one of the defining experiences of Montserrat.
Waiting times to see the Black Madonna can vary depending on the season and time of day, so it’s worth allowing a little extra time for this part of your visit.
Montserrat Portes Endins: Discover the Mountain from Within
To understand what makes Montserrat so special, your ticket includes entry to the “Montserrat Portes Endins” audiovisual space (in English, roughly “Montserrat from the inside”). This immersive exhibition introduces you to the daily life of the Benedictine monks, the history of the monastery, the spiritual significance of the site and the natural wonders of the mountain.
Through images, sound and video, you’ll get a sense of parts of Montserrat that most visitors never see: the rhythm of monastic life, the importance of music and prayer, and the unique geology and landscape that make the mountain so distinctive. It’s a good place to start your visit, giving context that makes everything else you see more meaningful, and it’s suitable for visitors of all ages.
Taste the Flavours of Montserrat: Liqueurs and Coca de Montserrat
Montserrat isn’t only about spirituality and scenery; it’s also known for local food products. As part of your tour, you’ll enjoy a tasting of traditional liqueurs at the shop, along with a sample of Coca de Montserrat, a thin, crisp and slightly sweet local speciality that’s a favourite souvenir among visitors.
The herbal liqueurs of the area reflect a long tradition of using aromatic mountain plants, and tasting them is a lovely way to experience a different side of Catalan culture. If you find a favourite, you can buy a bottle or a box of Coca de Montserrat to take home as a gift or a reminder of your day.
Please note: alcoholic beverages are served only to guests of legal drinking age.
Buffet Lunch at the Montserrat Restaurant
After a morning of exploring, you’ll sit down to a buffet lunch at the Montserrat Restaurant, located within the monastery complex. The buffet offers a varied selection of dishes, so there’s something for every taste, and you can eat at your own pace without searching for a place to eat or worrying about prices on the mountain.
Lunch is also a chance to rest, recharge and take in the setting before continuing your visit. Having your meal included makes the day easier to plan and gives good value, especially for families and groups.
Free Time to Explore the Mountain
Beyond the included visits, Montserrat has plenty to explore at your own pace. Walk around the monastery square, admire the views from the panoramic viewpoints, browse the local products market, or follow one of the marked paths that lead into the mountain’s natural park. Montserrat’s unusual rock formations, fresh mountain air and wide views across Catalonia make it a great place for photography and a peaceful break from the bustle of Barcelona.
Depending on timing, you may also have the opportunity to hear the monastery’s famous boys’ choir, the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest choirs in Europe. Performance times vary and are not guaranteed, so check the schedule on the day of your visit.
